  Katrina Relief Update: September 15

Whatever we do... let's do it for Jesus.
(Matthew 25:37f)

"...now we're able to offer ourselves..."

VENNARD COLLEGE WORK TEAM HEADS OUT TO AID HURRICANE VICTIMS September 15, 2005-(University Park, IA)- President of Vennard College, Dr. Bruce Moyer led the 39 member relief team of students, faculty, staff in prayer before they loaded into the vans on Thursday afternoon. They are headed to Bayou La Batre, Alabama, and Slidell, Louisiana, to help the hurricane victims they'll find there.

Many donations have poured into the college to provide equipment and supplies needed for the effort as well as covering the costs of fuel and food for the trip. The goal of $15,000 has been far exceeded with more than $25,000 in cash already received. Local churches and concerned individuals gave the bulk of the funds - a single church congregation in Michigan gave $2,800 and many small congregations have also given generously.

The college has already benefited from this venture, though not financially. The staff and students alike have been humbled and inspired by the tremendous response and show of support for what promises to be a life-changing experience for everyone involved. "Our hearts go out to the victims of the storms, but now we are able to offer ourselves to bring the hope of Christ's love to at least some of those who are hurting," says Larry Olson, Dean of Students, who is leading the group southward.

The importance of sharing Jesus' love was a major emphasis on campus this week. During our Fall Revival Week, the Vennard family suffered the loss of Trevor Lipson, freshman from Kansas, who was tragically killed in a traffic accident on Tuesday evening, just north of Oskaloosa. Though our hearts grieve over our loss of this solid, Christian young man (who would have been the 40th member of the Relief Team), we ultimately rejoice knowing he is enjoying the eternal reward for those who love Christ. Trevor was not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, he lived his faith daily, and had already had a positive impact on those around him in the brief time he was on campus. Please, pray for his family and friends who will miss him greatly.

Those who remain on campus will be meeting in the chapel for prayer every weekday morning at 11:40 a.m. Your prayer support is now needed, too. See list below.
