FINAL UPDATE FROM
THE VENNARD COLLEGE
HURRICANE KATRINA RELIEF TRIP

Subject: Final Update from Katrina Relief Trip
Thursday, September 22, 2005: Today
was an incredible day! Many people in our group said it
was one of the most heart touching, rewarding days of their
lives. We started the morning doing last minute prep work,
and we were trained in each of our jobs for the day. We
were separated into four groups: traffic control, greeters,
yellers, and distributors. The traffic control was
in charge of getting the cars into three separate lines
in the parking lot. The greeters' job was to talk
to the people and discuss their situations and their needs.
After the greeters had talked to the people they wrote down
the peoples' needs, and they sent them forward to the yellers.
The yellers yelled out to the distributors the peoples'
orders. Finally, the distributors at the different
stations would put the items into their cars, and they would
send them off with a Bible.

We started to distribute at
11:30 a.m. although we were scheduled to start at 12:00,
because there was already a line of cars waiting for us
to start. Over the next 3 ½ hours we would help over 350
families and get a full dose of the reality of the needs
of the people in the Bayou La Batre area.
The first thing that hit
us was the people were from all types of backgrounds.
They were people of all colors and all different socio-economic
classes. There were new cars, and cars that were on their
last legs. There were people with money, and those who
had nothing. There were people wearing diamonds, and people
wearing hand-me-downs. However, they all had one thing
in common; they needed help. As we heard all their stories
we were touched with their testimonies of loss and fear,
but we were also amazed at their resolve and willingness
to think of others over themselves. We also had the privilege
to pray with each person who came to the distribution.
One lady even prayed for us.
God's presence and blessings
were so apparent and amazing all throughout the day. It
is a bit heartbreaking that today was our last day helping
the victims. However, many of our group are seriously
thinking about giving up their Thanksgiving and Christmas
holidays to come back and help any way they can.

Thank you to those who have
followed our trip and lifted it up in prayer. Remember
to continue to pray for the victims of the hurricanes: Katrina,
Rita, and the rest.
