Student Employment
Campus employment opportunities are
posted on the bulletin board in the Administration
Building. The average student so employed works 10-12 hours
a week.
The Business Office does post off-campus employment
opportunities whenever the school is notified of them.
The student shoulders the responsibility
to pursue these opportunities.
ON-CAMPUS
EMPLOYMENT
Eligibility: Based on need; College Job
Program and/or Federal Work-Study.
Application:
On-campus jobs are guaranteed to no one. Each department
supervisor will interview applicants and manage their
own employees.
OFF-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT
Many businesses in the community have traditionally sought
to hire Vennard students. Job opportunities are posted on
campus. Students may pursue any of these or seek employment
elsewhere in the community.
VENNARD'S "OPEN EMPLOYMENT" POLICY
While we do participate in the federal Work Study program,
Vennard does not create jobs for students with financial
need, nor do we promise any jobs those who are eligible
for Work Study. This means that, of the 30 or so students
we employ each year, each one is hired (or fired) at the
discretion of his work supervisor. It also means that if
a student is interested in working for Vennard during the
school year, he/she will need to apply for one of the 30
job openings with the supervisor(s):
Custodial: Don Wheeler
Food Service: Sam Barber
Grounds: Don Wheeler
Library: Davida Sabine
Maintenance: Don Wheeler
Security: Don Wheeler
Student Grill: Sam Barber
Admissions: Larry Olson
As you can imagine, the application and the
interview processes can hardly be done long distance and
the supervisors usually anticipate needing the first couple
weeks to finish all their hiring. An ambitious and good
worker (especially one with a good resume) should not have
a problem getting hired though I suppose some of the 30
jobs have already been promised to/filled by returning students
who performed well last year.
ANTICIPATED INCOME
Whether or not any student qualifies to receive federal
Work Study, does not affect that student's pay rate. When
a student qualifies, Vennard is able to draw down 75% of
his payroll from the Dept. of Education up to that student's
eligibility limit. The same Dept. of Ed. also prohibits
us from paying higher wages to Work Study students than
to other employees.
This brings us to a student's anticipated
income. If he/she works
10 hours/week
for $5.50/hour (common rate, none are less)
for 15 weeks of the 16 week semester,
we usually figure that a student can pay about
$550 down on his school
bill each semester.
80-20 Split
The estimate above represents 80% of the student's net pay,
since we split our student employees' paychecks 80-20 when
they have a debit balance on their account. In other words,
when a student still owes on his school bill we pay the
student 20% of his net pay each pay period and apply 80%
to his school bill. Obviously, if a student works more or
less or decides to apply a portion of his/her 20% to his/her
school bill, the $550 figure will be different. That's just
what we estimate.
